Academic Classification and Promotion
Academic Classification and Promotion supports the holistic recognition of academic staff achievements in research/creative activity, education, service and leadership. This page provides information for those staff members submitting applications for classification or promotion.
Application Closing Dates
There are two classification and promotion rounds each year. Applications are due by close of business on the same dates every year:
Round 1 – 1 April*
Round 2 – 1 September*
*If dates occur on a weekend/ public holiday, applications are due on the next business day.
Application Categories
There are three different categories of classification and promotion application. These are:
Classification – for academic staff who have not yet received an academic classification
Confirmation of prior classification – for academic staff who have received an academic classification from another Australian University or equivalent institution within the last three years
Promotion – for academic staff who have previous received an academic classification from the University College
The requirements for each type of application are different, so applicants are encouraged to identify the application to them before they begin the application process.
How to apply
Step 1: Review information and get advice
You should read the following documents before beginning your application, as they contain important information about what you need to provide and the criteria used to assess applications:
You are strongly encouraged to inform your supervisor/ head of school about your intention to make a classification and promotion application, as they are good source of advice and support.
Step 2: Ask Referees to send references to Governance Office
If you are applying for levels B-E, you will be required to submit references. All your referees need to be able to comment on your achievement in one or more of the Fields of Attainment, but the number and type of referees differ according to the level sought:
| Level B | Two referees, at least one external to the University College and of national standing |
| Level C | three referees, at least two external to SCD, both of at least national standing |
| Level D | three referees, at least two external to SCD, at least one of international and one of national standing |
| Level E | three referees, at least two external to SCD, both of international standing |
Please note: All applicants are required to include a reference from their Head of Organisation. This is in addition to the references required for the level sought.

Step 3: Prepare your application
The preparation required will depend on which category of application you are making. To assist you, PDF copies of the online application forms have been made available under Step 1 above.
Applications for Classification and Promotion require applicants to state their achievements in the Fields of Attainment. Classification Applicants will do this as part of the form, while Promotions applicants will prepare and upload a separate response. Further information for Promotions applicants on what they need to include in their Details of Attainment response has also been provided under Step 1. The criteria used to assess applications can be found under Appendix 1 of the Classification and Promotion Policy.
As part of your response to the Field of Attainments, you will need to provide supporting documentation – particularly in the Field of Research. Please note:

Step 4: Complete and submit the online application
Once you have prepared your application and gathered your supporting documents, follow the relevant link below and complete the relevant application form.
Step 5: Monitor your email inbox
If further information is required, the governance office will contact you via email. Please check your email inbox regularly.
What happens next?
Your application will be reviewed by the Classification and Promotion Committee members independently, and then jointly at the Classification and Promotion Committee meeting, where outcomes are finalised.
You will be notified of the outcome via an official letter which will be sent to your email by the Governance Office. Outcomes are normally sent out within two weeks of the meeting.
